Adirondack Medical Center is located in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. The second facility of the medical center is located in Lake Placid, New York. Saranac Lake has 5,000 year round residents with a significantly greater population in the summer months. The campaign was extremely successful because of the involvement of well-known, high profile, area residents. The campaign was conducted for construction and renovations of numerous medical center facilities including: outpatient services, lobby/admitting area, emergency department, ambulatory care, medical imaging, surgical suites and anesthesia on-call rooms, cardiopulmonary department and the pharmacy.

Anderson Alliance for a Healthy Community

After completion of the feasibility study, we began serving as counsel for an innovative approach in not-for-profit collaboration. Six of the area's leading institutions, led by the area medical center, came together and strategically planned to improve the health of the Anderson community. The result was a successful $9 million fundraising effort for buildings, programs and endowment. Counsel provided residential management and facilitation for the six institutions' leadership, staff, and volunteers, educating over 125 board members about the project and training them in successful solicitation techniques. The community, through numerous public relation efforts, became interested in the projects and invested in the concept of a healthy community by generously supporting the effort.

Catholic Medical Center has had a dormant development program for the past few years while they disaffiliated with the cross-town hospital. The community has rallied around CMC and CMC has responded with strong bottom lines and growing market share. The development program has been reestablished and a feasibility study was completed for a $19 million building project to expand their open heart program, emergency services, diagnostic imaging and other service areas of the medical center. The campaign has had early success with the recruitment of a well-known and respected campaign chair along with a complete steering committee of dedicated volunteers. Beautiful campaign materials have been created along with a compelling video.

Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center Foundation

Ogdensburg is located in upstate New York, approximately one hour from Ottawa, Canada. The $3.5 million campaign raised $10.1 million in a city of 13,000 where the unemployment rate is 15 percent and the per capita income is less than one-half the average for New York State. We provided resident campaign direction. Some of the achievements during that time included: more than doubling Board member contributions to $202,000; implementing first peer-to-peer hospital-wide employee campaign; raising approximately $130,000; broadening foundation support through research; conducting first area-wide solicitation through volunteer solicitors and direct-mail; and securing a $250,000 challenge grant from a local foundation for the medical staff. Hilda Dienes of Donovan Slone provided resident campaign counsel that resulted in far exceeding the campaign goal with the assistance of a $7 million gift. The name of the medical center was changed to Claxton-Hepburn to reflect this amazing gift from Ms. Claxton.

Few hospitals of this size can boast of the range of comprehensive services as Concord Hospital. A missing piece was comprehensive cancer services. Donovan Slone, Inc. was hired to conduct a study and provide campaign consultation to raise $7.5-million to construct a new cancer center on the hospital campus. The campaign surpassed its original goal less than 9-months after the launch, and the goal was increased to $10-million. The hospital was successful in soliciting a Kresge Foundation grant.

Based in Warren, Michigan, and a member of Ascension Health, St. John Health System is a comprehensive health system serving metro Detroit and surrounding communities. St. John Health is comprised of eight hospitals and more than 100 medical facilities. Its history of serving the Detroit area dates back to 1844.
Donovan Slone, Inc. was retained by the SJHS trustees and Eliott Joseph, SJHS President and CEO, to conduct a comprehensive assessment of system philanthropy and to make recommendations about restructuring that would result in enhanced philanthropy. The report called for creation of a system-wide approach to philanthropy led by single SVP for Institutional advancement, restructuring boards and staff to create a matrix management approach, institution of a plan for philanthropy culture, creating of performance measures, pro forma financials and development of a case for support. Philanthropy was averaging about $15-million per year over past several years and through the work the system now has a plan to double giving over the next 3-5 years.

Martin Memorial hired the firm as counsel to conduct a feasibility study and assistance in raising $6.5 million for a new freestanding cancer center. A planning study was conducted which supported proceeding with the plan, and we placed a resident campaign director on site. The campaign successfully reached its goal of $6.5 million. We successfully promoted planned giving as a component to the campaign and re-established the internal planned giving procedures. We also implemented successful cultivation and solicitation strategies with representatives of major brokerage firms, tax and estate attorneys, and community members in affluent gated communities.

Meridian is the 25th largest employer in New Jersey, with more than 7,500 employees. Meridian is affiliated with more than 1,300 of the area's finest physicians.
President and CEO John Lloyd and Chief Development Officer Paulette Roberts, FAHP, hired the firm to help bring leadership focus on re-organizing staff for higher productivity, bring alignment to the strategic plan with trustees, medical staff and administration, and establishing a strategic philanthropy plan for greatly enhanced growth. As a result, Meridian adopted a comprehensive philanthropy plan that sets forth the steps necessary to achieve these goals.

After completing the planning study we were engaged to conduct a campaign to raise $10 million in support of medical center expansion including a medical surgical patient pavilion, a comprehensive cancer center, outpatient services and other projects. Moore Regional was known in the community as an affluent organization. We worked with staff and leadership to mitigate this perception, establish a clear sense of organizational need, and promote philanthropy in support of the institution. Planned gifts played a major role in reaching the campaign goal.

The hospital is recognized in the top 10 nationally for cardiovascular surgery by AARP Modern Maturity, has received other national recognition as a top 100-heart hospital, and is noted as a leader in quality outcomes in New Jersey. The firm was hired because of the principals' ability to apply highly strategic thinking to a complex and significant undertaking. The firm recommended a $40-million goal and was selected to provide campaign counsel.

Donovan Slone, Inc. was hired to conduct a feasibility study and serves as counsel for a $35-million campaign for major improvements in emergency services, ambulatory, cardiac services and patient flow.

The feasibility study tested a $2.1 million goal for a $4.1 million comprehensive Women's Health Pavilion to support gynecology and obstetrics. We recommended a goal of $1.5 million and provided resident campaign management. The campaign was successful in engaging the community about this important project. Physicians were supportive of the effort greatly leveraging their own gifts from grateful patients and other campaign prospects. The campaign raised more than $2 million for this center of excellence.

Counsel managed and successfully completed two campaigns for this Foundation, a $7.5 million campaign in 1986 - 1987 and a $9.1 million campaign in 1997 - 1998 primarily to finance the construction of a comprehensive wellness center. Significant accomplishments of the campaign included broadening the base of philanthropic support from the first campaign, and successful solicitation of pharmaceutical and other corporations. Identification, research, cultivation and solicitation covered a donor base spread over a 4-county area in New Jersey.
